The Edge of Meaning: Women in British Surrealism

Thursday 13th February, 18:30

The Brown Collection, 1 Bentinck Mews
About
This unique study evening at The Brown Collection London celebrates experimental art by women who engaged with Surrealism in Britain; women who have, for a century, been marginalised from histories of modern British art.

Our event combines a lecture with a private viewing of works and lively conversation. We hope to stimulate creative thinking through insights into works by artists such as Ithell Colquhoun, Grace Pailthorpe, Marion Adnams, Anna Zinkeisen, Eileen Agar, Leonora Carrington, and Edith Rimmington.

Work by these women has begun to feature in exhibitions and publications such as the current exhibitions: Surrealism at The Pompidou Paris and The Laughing Stock of the Heartless Stars at The Brown Collection which presents work by Adnams, Pailthorpe, and Zinkeisen.

During the evening, we will also introduce unseen and unsung work by Nadia Friedlander, a Surrealist whose history has yet to be written.

Structure
  • A lecture by Lizzie Perrotte exploring the lives and works of women in British Surrealism
  • Private viewing of a curated selection of surrealist works, from the collection and beyond
  • A discussion and Q&A session with the audience.
